RAISE > Central South > Projects > Improving writing skills through developing pupil oracy
“Love Speaking, Adore Writing” Central South Wales Action Research Project 7 – 17 Schools.

This project was the largest of the projects in the South Central Wales Consortium.

All 17 schools are located in South Wales, in the United Kingdom. 16 schools are in the County Borough of Rhondda Cynon Taff and 1 school is in the Vale of Glamorgan.

16 of the schools are situated in the South Wales valleys which were once famous for the coal and iron mining industry. One of the schools is located in the coastal town of Barry near Cardiff.

The age, type and size of the 17 schools vary. Some schools in the project were built over 100 years ago whilst others have been built during the past 10 years.

13 schools serve pupils from the ages of 3 to 11 years (Primary Schools).

2 schools serve pupils from the ages of 3 to 7 years (Infant Schools).

2 schools serve pupils from the ages of 7 to 11 years (Junior Schools).

School size ranges from 80 to over 400 pupils.

The number of children receiving free school meals at the 17 schools ranges from 22% to 66% according to the data analysis (PLASC Jan 2010)

Due to the size of the group it was decided at a very early stage that distributive leadership would be developed with five schools five sub projects under the theme of “Improving writing skills through developing oracy”.  Penyrenglyn Primary School was given the task of organising the finance and Llanhari Primary School given the task to co-ordinate and organise the educational aspects of the project.

The schools underlined below in bold indicate the school leading the sub project. Each of the 17 schools in the project selected a project which they would develop. However each of the schools could also access training and resources of the other activities during the year.
